Here at Park Mechanical, we offer a variety of sump pump and ejector pump services in Sacramento and beyond. But what exactly is a sump pump and ejector pump you ask? A sump pump is an electrical pump used to pump water from the basement or crawl space to outside of the home. A sump pit, which collects water from a basement or crawl space, is used together with a sump pump.
The sump pump pumps the water out of that sump pit and away from your home’s foundation. Sump pumps are used in areas where flooding is common and are also used in areas with a low water table. Many sump pumps will have battery backup systems that will activate in the event that the electricity fails.
There are two types of sump pumps:
- Submersible: The submersible sump pump is housed in a hole or sump pit. Water runs into this pit either through drains or by gravity and is pumped out of the home through a pipe.
- Pedestal: The motor for the pedestal sump pump is located above the sump pit. However, it works in much the same way as the submersible variety does.
Both pumps push water out of the pit through the pipe when the water becomes high enough to activate the pressure sensor. The pipes leading from the pump out of the house will usually be outfitted with a one-way valve in order to prevent the water from returning to the home. Outgoing water may be sent to the lawn or to a municipal sewer system. Sump pumps require regular maintenance to keep them working properly. This maintenance generally consists of cleaning the gravel, dirt, sand and other debris from the sump pit. It is recommended that they be cleaned out at least once a year to prevent clogs. Sump pumps should be tested annually to ensure proper operation. If your sump pump is damaged or backed up, it won’t be able to remove the water build-up. This puts your household in danger of mold growth, which can be deadly. Don’t delay! Call us today!
Ejector Pump Installation
An ejector pump is similar to a sump pump except that it is used for sewer water rather than standing water or ground water in a basement. These pumps are installed in homes that have a bathroom that is below the level of the city sewage pipes or the home’s septic system. They push sewage water up to the outgoing pipes but also grind the waste to make the journey easier. Ejector pumps, also called sanitary sewer pumps or solid waste pumps, are sometimes used to push out water that comes from basement washing machines or laundry room tubs as well.
